Window & Door Slide Rails: Aluminum Track and Roller Manufacturing Guide
Direct answer: A window or door slide rail is an extruded aluminum track with matching roller hardware. Track is 6063-T5, 1.2-2.0 mm wall, anodized or powder coated. Rollers are POM or PA66 wheels on stainless or zinc housings, 20-40 kg per pair. Governing requirements: track straightness, roller load rating, corrosion grade — EN 13126 durability runs 5,000-20,000 cycles. VOLCRIX makes the hardware in Wenzhou — 35 years, ISO 9001, IATF 16949.
What Actually Wears Out on a Sliding Window
A sliding window fails for one of three reasons, none of them the glass.
The roller flattens. A nylon wheel carrying 20 kg sits in one position for months. Under sustained load at summer temperatures the contact patch deforms. The sash drops a millimetre and drags on the sill. The customer calls it a bad window; it is a roller with the wrong material or load rating.
The track corrodes. An anodized track specified for interior use gets installed on a balcony. Salt and runoff collect in the channel, the anodizing pits at the drainage slots, and within two seasons the roller runs on bare aluminum oxide.
The track is not straight. Extruded profiles come off the press with a bow. Without straightening and checking, two sashes in one opening run on different effective widths and the overlap gap varies along the travel.
Track Profiles: Alloy, Temper and Wall
| Parameter | Typical Spec | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Alloy / temper | 6063-T5; T6 or 6005A-T5 for large sashes | T6 adds yield strength where a 2.5 m sash loads the track in bending |
| Wall thickness | 1.2 mm residential, 1.4-1.6 mm commercial, 2.0 mm heavy doors | Below 1.2 mm the web dents at fixing screws under roller point load |
| Straightness | ≤1.0 mm per metre, ≤3 mm over 3 m | Bow translates directly into sash binding |
| Twist | ≤1° per metre | Twist tilts the roller path; the sash rides one wheel edge |
| Channel width | ±0.15 mm | Too wide and the sash rattles, too narrow and it binds |
| Anodizing | Class 10 interior, Class 15-20 exterior | Thin anodizing pits at drainage slots in coastal service |
| Powder coating | 60-80 µm, Qualicoat | Better colour range; edge coverage is the weak point |
Rollers: Where the Load Rating Comes From
| Component | Options | Selection Logic |
|---|---|---|
| Wheel | POM, PA66, glass-filled POM, stainless | POM has low friction and stable dimensions; PA66 handles higher load but absorbs moisture |
| Bearing | Plain bore, single ball, double ball | Plain bore is quiet and cheap but wears oval; ball bearing carries 2-3x the load |
| Housing | Zinc-plated steel, stainless, engineering plastic | Zinc for interior; stainless for exterior; plastic where load is low |
| Axle | Riveted, staked, screw with threadlock | Riveted is most reliable in volume; a screw that backs out drops the sash |
Load rating is per pair and static. A 40 kg per pair rating means two wheels support 40 kg without permanent deformation. It does not mean 40 kg in motion for 20,000 cycles. Ask for the dynamic rating and the temperature it applies at: POM softens above roughly 80 °C, which a sun-facing track reaches.
Practical selection: a 1.5 by 2 m double-glazed sash weighs 35 to 50 kg. Use 60 kg per pair, not 40. The cost difference is cents and it removes the most common warranty claim.
Durability: What EN 13126 Asks For
Twenty thousand cycles is roughly one open-and-close per day for 27 years, which sounds generous until you remember a balcony door in a family home sees three or four cycles a day in summer. Grade 5 is the realistic minimum for anything opened daily. Corrosion grade is separate and often the real constraint on coastal projects, because the hardware fails chemically before it fails mechanically.

Corrosion: The Spec That Gets Skipped
| Environment | Requirement | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| Interior, dry | Zinc plating, 96-120 h NSS | Adequate where no condensation forms |
| Exterior, inland | Anodized track + stainless hardware, 240-480 h | Coating is the primary defence; hardware must not be the weak link |
| Coastal | 316 stainless preferred, 720 h+ | Chlorides defeat zinc and thin anodizing |
| Industrial / pool | 316 stainless, 1000 h+ | Chlorine and sulphur attack both coating and wheel |
What VOLCRIX Manufactures, and What We Do Not
In-House Capability
- Roller housings & brackets — progressive die stamping, 40 presses 5-200 tons
- Roller wheels — POM/PA66 molding; stainless on Swiss lathes
- Axles & pins — 60+ Japanese Star Swiss machines
- Stamped clips, stops, end caps — ±0.05 mm
- Springs — 60 coilers, anti-lift and detent
- Finishing — zinc plating, passivation, powder coating
- Inspection — CMM, salt spray, EN 13126 cycle testing
We manufacture the hardware. We do not extrude aluminum profiles — that is a separate process with its own die cost, and we buy profile from qualified extruders when a program needs the complete assembly. We do not cut glass or assemble window units.
What we deliver is stamped and machined hardware to your drawing, with dimensional reports, material certification per heat lot, coating thickness verification, and PPAP where required.

Frequently Asked Questions
What aluminum alloy is used for window and door slide rails?
6063-T5 is standard for residential tracks. It extrudes well and takes anodizing evenly. Large sashes or heavy entry doors move to 6063-T6 or 6005A-T5 for extra yield strength. Wall thickness matters as much as alloy: 1.2 mm residential, 1.4-1.6 mm commercial, 2.0 mm heavy entry doors.
What does EN 13126 durability grade actually mean?
EN 13126 grades hardware by cycles. Grade 3 is 5,000, Grade 4 is 10,000, Grade 5 is 20,000. Twenty thousand cycles is one operation per day for 27 years, which is not generous for a balcony door seeing three or four cycles a day. Grade 5 is the realistic minimum for daily use.
Why do sliding windows start dragging after two or three years?
Three causes. The roller flat-spotted from sustained load at summer temperature. The track corroded because interior-grade anodizing was used outdoors. Or the extrusion was never straightened, so two sashes run on different effective widths.
Can VOLCRIX supply the complete window rail assembly?
We manufacture the hardware: roller housings, brackets, wheels, axles, stamped clips and stops, and finishing. We do not extrude aluminum profiles, so for a complete assembly we buy profile from qualified extruders. We do not cut glass or assemble window units.
How much load can a window roller carry?
Ratings are per pair and static. A 40 kg per pair roller supports 40 kg without permanent deformation. A 1.5 by 2 m double-glazed sash weighs 35-50 kg, so 60 kg per pair is the realistic minimum. Ask for the dynamic rating and the temperature it applies at.
