When to Choose Swiss Turning

Swiss turning is the right choice when your part is long relative to its diameter, requires tight concentricity, or needs multiple operations (turning, milling, drilling, threading) in a single setup.

Typical parts: EV charging pins, connector pins, precision shafts, medical device components, terminals, and small fasteners.

Why choose it: Swiss machines hold +/-0.01mm tolerances even on long, slender parts. The guide bushing design eliminates deflection, and the ability to perform multiple operations in one cycle reduces handling and improves consistency.

When to Choose CNC Machining

CNC machining (milling and turning) is ideal for parts with complex 3D geometries, large diameters, or when you need a quick prototype before committing to production tooling.

Typical parts: Custom housings, brackets, fixtures, complex mechanical components, low-volume prototypes.

Why choose it: CNC machining offers the most flexibility for design changes. No dedicated tooling means you can iterate quickly. It is the best process for low-to-medium volumes where part geometry is complex.

When to Choose Metal Stamping

Metal stamping excels at high-volume production of parts with consistent geometry. Once the die is made, each stroke of the press produces a finished part in seconds.

Typical parts: Server rack rails, mounting brackets, electrical terminals, heat sink fins, chassis components.

Why choose it: At volumes above 10,000 pieces, stamping delivers the lowest per-part cost. Progressive dies combine multiple operations (blanking, forming, coining, piercing) in a single pass, minimizing secondary operations.

How to Decide

Start with your annual volume and part geometry:

  • Long, thin, high-precision (connector pins, shafts) → Swiss turning
  • Complex 3D, low volume (prototypes, custom housings) → CNC machining
  • Flat or formed, high volume (rails, brackets, terminals) → Stamping
