Every progressive die stamping quote is built from the same five cost blocks. If one of them is missing or vague, the quote is a guess, not a price.
- Tooling. The die is the largest upfront cost. Progressive die tooling typically runs $5,000 to $50,000+ depending on part size, feature count, and tolerance. Simple single-stage dies start around $1,500 to $3,000. Low-volume 1 to 3 station progressive dies sit at $3,000 to $15,000.
- Material. Material cost is driven by alloy, temper, thickness, and form (sheet, coil, or pre-cut blank). Stainless 304 is roughly 3 to 4× the cost of cold-rolled steel at the same thickness; aluminum 5052 is roughly 2× CRS. Galvanized G60 vs G90 is a 30% material price delta at the same thickness.
- Setup and run time. Press setup, die tryout, and first-article inspection are fixed costs amortized across the lot size. For a 5,000 piece run on a progressive die, setup can be 30 to 50% of the total quote. For a 100,000 piece run, it drops to 5 to 10%.

- Send the drawing, not just a sketch. A sketch gets you a ballpark; a drawing gets you a real quote. Include GD&T callouts, datum scheme, material spec, surface-finish requirements, and any critical features.
- Specify annual volume and target lot size. Annual volume drives the process recommendation (progressive die vs low-volume die vs CNC). Lot size drives setup amortization. Both numbers matter for an accurate quote.
