CNC Aluminum Plate Machining Service | Milled Aluminum Plate

CNC Aluminum Plate Machining Service | Milled Aluminum Plate

When a buyer asks us for a CNC aluminum plate quote, they usually already know the alloy and the finished thickness, but they have not decided how the part is going to be held on the machine and how much post-processing will be needed. We have been milling cnc aluminum plates in Wenzhou since 1991, and our shop floor runs 3-axis and 4-axis VMCs with work envelopes up to 2 m × 1 m × 0.4 m. This page covers what we can do with cnc aluminum plates, the alloys we stock, and what to send with a large aluminum plate machining service RFQ so the quote comes back accurate the first time.

Send your STEP or DXF and a 2D drawing with GD&T to our quoting form, or message us on WhatsApp at +86 188 6828 5255. We respond inside 24 hours with a milled aluminum plate quote that includes material, machining time, finish, and inspection.

Common Applications for CNC Aluminum Plates

CNC aluminum plates are the workhorse of low-volume structural parts, jigs, fixtures, and equipment panels. The four applications we run most often:

  • Jigs and fixtures for production lines: cnc aluminum plates machined from 6061-T6 stock, typically 10 mm to 50 mm thick, used to hold weldments, machined components, and assemblies during downstream manufacturing. Tolerance class is usually ±0.05 mm on locating features and ±0.1 mm on the rest.
  • Equipment panels and enclosures: front panels, side panels, and chassis plates for industrial electronics, automation controllers, and test equipment. These parts often need milled pockets, threaded inserts, and a brushed or anodised finish.
  • Structural base plates and adapter plates: large aluminum plate machining service work for machine builders, robot integrators, and semiconductor equipment. Stock is typically 6061-T6 or 7075-T651 in 20 mm to 100 mm thicknesses.
  • Optical and inspection plates: precision reference plates and surface plates for metrology labs. These are typically 6061-T6 stabilized, sometimes lapped after machining, with flatness to 0.02 mm over 600 mm.

Manufacturing Support from VOLCRIX

When a milled aluminum plate drawing lands on our engineering desk, we look at four things before we send a quote:

  • Stock size and source: 6061-T6 is the default for general structural parts. 7075-T651 is used where strength matters. 5052 is used where formability or corrosion resistance matters. We carry 6061 and 7075 in plate up to 100 mm thick and 5052 in sheet up to 6 mm thick.
  • Fixturing strategy: a cnc aluminum plate part has to be held rigidly during machining to hold tolerance and surface finish. We use vacuum tables for thin plate, machinable wax or toe-clamps for finished surfaces, and custom soft jaws for high-tolerance pockets. The fixturing method is on the quote as a separate line.
  • Tooling and machining parameters: roughing passes use indexable inserts at high material removal rates; finishing passes use solid carbide end mills at lower feed rates to hit surface finish. We rough and finish in two setups when flatness matters, so we are not fighting residual stress from the roughing pass.
  • Surface finish and post-processing: as-milled, brushed, anodised (clear or black), chromate conversion, powder coating, or wet paint. Finish is a separate line on the quote because it changes both cost and lead time.

For large aluminum plate machining service work, our 4-axis VMCs handle plate up to 2 m × 1 m × 0.4 m in a single setup, with 4-axis tombstones or trunnions for multi-sided work. We do not split large plates into two setups unless the drawing explicitly allows it, because setup error is the most common source of out-of-tolerance features on big plate work.

Buyer Checklist for CNC Aluminum Plate RFQs

Most of the back-and-forth on a new cnc aluminum plate RFQ comes from missing information. Before you ask for a quote, make sure these four items are clear:

  • Stock material and temper: 6061-T6 is the most common, but 7075-T651 has higher strength and 5052 has better corrosion resistance. If you do not specify, we will default to 6061-T6 and flag it on the quote.
  • Finished thickness: this drives how much material we have to remove. A 100 mm plate milled down to 80 mm is a very different job than a 12 mm plate milled to 10 mm, and the cycle times are not comparable.
  • Critical features and tolerances: machined pockets, threaded holes, dowel pin holes, sealing grooves, and O-ring grooves. Each critical feature should have its own tolerance callout on the drawing.
  • Surface finish and flatness requirements: Ra value on machined surfaces, flatness over a defined area, parallelism between two faces. These drive tooling choice and fixturing strategy and they belong on the drawing, not in the email.

Authority Summary

VOLCRIX runs an ISO 9001 and IATF 16949 certified shop floor. Our VMCs are calibrated annually, and our tooling is tracked per job in a tool library so a worn end mill never runs on a precision part. Critical dimensions are checked on a Zeiss coordinate measuring machine, surface roughness is measured with a profilometer, and flatness is checked with a precision level on the granite table. Every shipment leaves with a dimensional report and a material cert traceable to the original plate heat.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the largest aluminum plate you can machine?

Our 4-axis VMCs handle aluminum plate up to 2 m × 1 m × 0.4 m in a single setup. For larger work, we split the part into sections and fixture them together on a tombstone, but most cnc aluminum plates we run fit in the 2 m × 1 m envelope. If the part is bigger than that, send the drawing and we will tell you up front whether we can hold tolerance on a multi-setup build.

Do you stock 6061, 7075, and 5052 plate?

Yes. We carry 6061-T6 and 7075-T651 plate in 6 mm to 100 mm thicknesses, and 5052-H32 sheet in 1 mm to 6 mm thicknesses. Other alloys — 2024-T3, 6063-T5, 5083-H116 — are pulled from certified mills with mill certs on every plate. For prototype runs and small lots, we typically cut plate from our stock; for production runs over 500 kg, we sometimes pull plate direct from the mill for cost reasons.

What tolerance can you hold on a milled aluminum plate?

Standard milled aluminum plate tolerance is ±0.05 mm on linear dimensions and ±0.1 mm on flatness over 300 mm. High-precision work runs ±0.01 mm on critical features and ±0.02 mm on flatness over 300 mm, with surface finishes down to Ra 0.8 μm. Tolerance class is per-feature on the drawing, and we hold it on a Zeiss CMM and a precision surface plate.

How fast can I get a cnc aluminum plate quote?

Most cnc aluminum plate quotes go out inside 24 hours when the drawing, 3D model, alloy, and tolerances are clear. Complex parts with tight GD&T or unusual finish requirements may take 48 hours because the engineer walks the tooling and fixturing before pricing. Sample lead time is 7 to 15 days; production lead time is 3 to 4 weeks after sample approval.

Why VOLCRIX for Precision Manufacturing

VOLCRIX is a Wenzhou-based precision manufacturing facility that has run one-stop metal and plastic part production since 1991. Our shop floor holds more than 60 Star Swiss turning machines, 40 stamping presses, 20 injection molding machines, and 60 spring coiling machines, all tied together by a single quality system.

Every batch is verified on a Zeiss coordinate measuring machine, and a spectrometer checks incoming material chemistry on every coil and bar we receive. Surface finish, plating thickness, and hardness are tested in our in-house lab, and every shipment leaves with an inspection report. Our quality system is certified to ISO 9001 and IATF 16949, which is the same standard automotive Tier 1 suppliers run under.

We do not hide behind buzzwords. When a buyer sends a 3D model and a 2D drawing, our engineer reviews tolerances, callouts, and material grade before quoting, and we tell you on the first reply if a dimension is at risk or if a feature needs a small design change to be producible. That conversation is what separates a supplier that ships parts from one that ships risk.

Quoting turnaround is 24 hours for most RFQs, sample turnaround is 7 to 15 days depending on complexity, and production lead time after sample approval is typically 3 to 4 weeks. We support both small prototype runs and high-volume production, with no minimum order quantity on engineering samples and volume pricing that scales with annual usage.

Why Plate Choice Matters on a CNC Aluminum Plate Job

The alloy you choose for a cnc aluminum plate part drives everything downstream — machinability, surface finish, anodising response, weldability, and corrosion resistance. Buyers who spec “aluminum” without a temper usually end up with a quote that is either too expensive (because the supplier picked 7075 to be safe) or too weak (because the supplier picked 5052 because it is cheap to cut). Here is how we think about alloy selection.

  • 6061-T6: the default for cnc aluminum plates. Good strength, good machinability, weldable, takes anodising well. Use it unless you have a reason not to.
  • 7075-T651: higher strength, used where the part sees real load — robot end-effectors, machine tool components, structural fittings. More expensive, slightly harder to machine, and it does not weld well.
  • 5052-H32: better corrosion resistance and formability, used for marine, food service, and enclosures that get bent after machining. Softer than 6061, so it is not the right choice for high-wear surfaces.
  • 2024-T3: fatigue-resistant, used in aerospace structural parts. Harder to machine than 6061 and requires more careful tooling selection, but the fatigue performance is worth it for cyclic-loaded parts.
  • 6063-T5: smoother anodised finish, used where appearance matters. Slightly softer than 6061, so it is not for high-load applications.

How We Hold Flatness on Large Plate Work

Flatness on a cnc aluminum plate is harder than it looks. The plate is rolled at the mill with internal residual stress, and when material is removed from one face during machining the residual stress releases unevenly and the plate warps. This is a particular issue on large plate work where a lot of material has to come off.

We control flatness three ways. First, we rough and finish in two separate setups with a stress-relief step in between — the roughing pass removes most of the material, the part sits for 24 hours to let residual stress redistribute, and then we go back and finish to final tolerance. Second, we use a vacuum table or a magnetic chuck for thin plate so the part does not clamp-induced distort. Third, we measure flatness on a granite surface plate with a precision level and document the value against the lot number.

For the most demanding flatness requirements — optical reference plates, surface plates, and metrology equipment bases — we lap the finished part after machining. Lapping takes the surface down to a mirror finish with flatness to 0.005 mm over 600 mm. It is a separate process with its own tooling and its own lead time, but it is the right answer when the part is a measurement reference.
